Abd al-Karim b. Tawus

B. Tawus’s teachings are anchored in the concept of spiritual hierarchy—a stratification of existence that recognizes varying degrees of proximity to the divine. This notion presents a compelling metaphor: the soul’s journey is akin to a river coursing towards the ocean, ever striving towards the source of its manifestation. In this vein, b. Tawus articulated that the path of spiritual elevation requires not only knowledge and piety but also an unwavering commitment to the principles of justice and equity, virtues paramount to Shia doctrine.

The metaphor of the river signifies not merely a destination but the dynamism inherent in spiritual pursuits. As the river twists and turns, so too does the soul navigate the vicissitudes of life. This journey emphasizes introspection and a conscious effort to refine one’s character—echoing the teachings of Imams who underscored the importance of self-purification (tazkiyah) as a precursor to genuine spiritual ascent.
