Calumny a sin of tongue

The Qur’an explicitly admonishes against calumny in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), which warns believers to refrain from suspicion and gossip. Such teachings serve as a cautionary reminder that protecting the dignity of others is paramount in the eyes of God.

3. The Role of Intent and Context

Shia teachings emphasize that the intention behind the speech is crucial. The context in which calumny occurs plays a substantial role in determining its ethical and moral implications. If an individual speaks ill of another for justifiable reasons — such as warning others about harmful behavior — it may be viewed differently than heedless chatter aimed at causing distress. Nevertheless, discernment is necessary, as the line between constructive criticism and malicious calumny can often be tenuous.
