Salat Laylat al-Qadr

Rituals and Practices of Salat Laylat al-Qadr

The rituals performed during Laylat al-Qadr are both diverse and profound, with Salat being the apex of worship. The Salat consists of special units (rak’ahs) that vary across different Shia traditions. The most commonly observed Salat consists of two rak’ahs, with an emphasis on the recitation of Surah al-Fatiha followed by another chapter of the Quran in each rak’ah. However, other practices highlight the performance of additional rak’ahs, often amounting to up to 100, divided into groups depending on local customs.

In addition to the obligatory Salat, the night is marked by the recitation of specific supplications (duas) that focus on seeking forgiveness, guidance, and spiritual illumination. Among the most esteemed supplications is Dua al-Jawshan al-Kabir, which calls for mercy and protection from divine wrath. This invocation is lauded for its eloquence and depth, allowing the believer to articulate their innermost aspirations and fears before Allah.
